Melkamu Temeselew Tegegn graduated from the University of Gondar in Ethiopia, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in optometry in July 2016, and a master’s degree in clinical optometry in July 2019.  Melkamu began his work at the University of Gondar in the Department of Optometry as a Graduate Assistant II and Junior Optometrist. After earning his master's degree, he worked at the same institution as a lecturer, clinician, community engagement officer, researcher, and academic coordinator. Melkamu has taught into a variety of optometry subjects, including Clinical Refraction, Ophthalmic Dispensing, and Low Vision Rehabilitation, teaching undergraduate and post-graduate optometry students. He has diagnosed and treated both infectious and non-infectious eye conditions, corrected refractive errors, and provided low vision care and rehabilitation to visually-impaired patients using optical aids. He has been involved in community outreach, school vision screening programs, and various committees. He has published 27 research articles in peer-reviewed journals as a contributing author. Currently, Melkamu is a PhD candidate in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne, working under the supervision of Professor Laura Downie, Dr. Mengliang Wu and Professor Neil O’Brien-Simpson on a project focussed on defining novel ocular surface biomarkers in Sjogren’s disease.
