Mengyu is currently pursuing her PhD in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne, supervised by Professor Laura Downie, Professor Lyndell Lim, Professor Scott Mueller, and Dr Mengliang Wu.

She completed dual bachelor’s degrees - a Bachelor of Medicine from Nanchang University (in China) and a First-Class Honours Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Queen Mary University of London in 2020, over which time she undertook laboratory research in immunology. She subsequently completed a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, receiving extensive clinical training and developing strong clinical and research interests in anterior segment ocular diseases. During this period, she became a licensed and registered ophthalmologist in China.

Following qualification, Mengyu practised as an ophthalmologist at Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, from 2023 to 2025. Her clinical work primarily involved outpatient ophthalmic care, as well as the surgical management of cataract, corneal, and conjunctival diseases. In parallel, she actively engaged in research, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and contributing to several publications.

Her current PhD research focuses on anterior uveitis, exploring the impact of environmental factors, particularly the ocular and systemic microbiome, to generate novel insights for improving disease diagnosis and management.

Outside of research, Mengyu brings the same passion to life as she does to her work, staying actively engaged in her interests. She enjoys playing badminton and has a strong love for music and piano, which she both listens to and performs in her spare time.
